<image:caption>Joanna Rakoff is the author of the international bestselling memoir My Salinger Year (Knopf, 2014) and the novel A Fortunate Age (Scribner 2010), winner of the Goldberg Prize for Fiction, the Elle Readers’ Prize, and a San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller. Rakoff’s books have been translated into twenty languages and nominated for major prizes in The Netherlands and France. She has written frequently for The New York Times, Vogue, Marie Claire, O: The Oprah Magazine, and many other publications. The film adaptation of My Salinger Year stars Margaret Qualley as Joanna and Sigourney Weaver as her boss. Directed by Oscar-nominee Philippe Falardeau, the film opened in theaters and streaming in North America on March 5, 2021 and in the UK on May 17, 2021. When asked about publishing culture now, as opposed to the mid-90s when My Salinger Year takes place, Rakoff responded, “Books and literature are more part of the cultural conversation than ever. There are great events every night. Publishers are, I think, returning to that more personal, personality-driven style of putting books into the world. We’re living in a golden age of all things literary.” A graduate of Oberlin College, Rakoff holds an MFA from Columbia University. She lives in Cambridge, MA. Joanna will teach a workshop on Memoir. Write 25 is pleased to show the film adaptation of Rakoff's memoir My Salinger Year, with a question and answer period following the movie.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Keeonna Harris (she/her) is a Black woman, storyteller, abolitionist scholar, mother, and life coach. Keeonna was born and raised in Watts, and other parts of South-Central Los Angeles, California. In her writing, Keeonna explores conceptions of motherhood, familial relationships, and wellbeing for Black women in the United States--focusing on the health disparities, relationships, and radical organizing for women connected to systems of mass incarceration. Keeonna's debut memoir "Mainline Mama" was published with Amistad Press in February 2025. She has written for Salon.com and has a chapter in the anthology "So We Can Know: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth" edited by Aracelis Girmay (Haymarket Books, 2023) and an interview in "(Super)vision: On Motherhood and Surveillance" edited by Sophie Hamcher (Orbis, 2023). Keeonna is an inaugural recipient of the 2018-2019 PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship and the 2024-2025 Haymarket Writing for Freedom Fellowship. In 2025 she was named as a Literary Lion by the King County Library System Foundation. She also received the 2021 Tin House Summer Writing Residency, the 2023 Baldwin Center for the Arts Residency, a 2023 Hedgebrook Writer in Residence, and a 2023 Edith Wharton Resident. Keeonna is building the Borderland Project, a community support system for women maintaining ties to an incarcerated person. Turning Words into Magic Workshop Many of us get stuck, searching for that grandiose word rather than writing words that we use every day and that reflect our lives. Sometimes, the magic of the word is in the mundane. This workshop is for writers who are feeling discouraged and unable to find the perfect word/and or words to convey the nuance and depth that we want our readers to feel. We will be exploring excerpts from Heavy by Kiese Laymon and The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw. Participants will leave this intensive with a set of practical strategies on choosing a word that “fits” the ongoing themes of their work. We will do writing exercises in which I will push you to think of how to use those words differently, how to lean into the everyday use of your chosen word to add a richness to current or future projects.</image:caption>

<image:caption>KATE SCHATZ is a feminist author, educator, and public speaker. She's the New York Times-bestselling author of the "Rad Women" book series; the novel Where the Girls Were; the 33 ⅓ book Rid of Me: A Story; and Do the Work: An Anti-Racist Activity Book, co-written with W. Kamau Bell. She lives in the Bay Area with her wife, three children, and pets. In all she does, Kate is committed to sharing radical histories that shine light on the marginalized people who've truly made America (and the world) great: the people of color, the immigrants, the queers, the punks, the weirdos, the artists, the workers, and the women. Writers (Un)block: A Generative Creative Writing Workshop While the imagination is limitless, our perspectives aren’t, and it’s common for writers, artists, storytellers, and creative humans to feel a bit stuck when it comes to inspiration, ideas, source material, and even language itself. Some call this “Writers Block”—I call it time to shake things up and try prompts and exercises based on everything from found objects and weather patterns to song lyrics and overheard conversations. Together we'll remind ourselves that we are constantly surrounded by inspiration—we just have to look closely, listen deeply, and be open to new ways of noticing and creating.</image:caption>

She is the author of two young adult novels: The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door and Starbird Murphy and the World Outside, both published by Viking Children’s Books. A recipient of residencies at Hedgebrook, Bloedel Reserve and Mineral School, Karen has also received grants from The City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, 4Culture, and Artist Trust. Karen has competed on four National Poetry Slam Teams, acted as Host/Curator of the Seattle Poetry Slam, toured nationally and internationally as a performance poet, and represented the US Department of State as a Cultural Ambassador. She teaches for Writers-in-the-Schools. Using Prose Poems to Tell the Story Workshop The tools of the prose writer—character, setting, and narrative change—meet the tools of the poet—compression, musicality, and form—in the prose poem. Together we'll explore this fertile intersection and experiment with hybrid forms that invite our stories onto a single page.</image:caption>
